This paper, titled “School Dropout or Permanence in Career and Technical Education? A case study in IFSul-rio-grandense – Santana do Livramento Campus”, is a result of an applied research, which was developed in the Professional Master Program in Career and Technical Education, of the Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul (Instituto de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Sul) – Campus Porto Alegre. The central theme of this paper is the student dropout rates in the Career and Technical Education – CTE. While the dropout phenomenon is a real problem in the basic and higher education and there is already a bibliography which makes the theme challenging and instigating, in the career and technical education, on the other hand, studies are still incipient. The democratization of high school career and technical education in Brazil is still a recent process in the country’s history. And, if the educational democratization means both giving student access to school and their permanence in this environment, a crisis in either one of these two conditions would become a problem. Dropout rates precisely regard factors which make the student stop their education path. Therefore, it is related to the democratization of career and technical education in the country. This study is considered relevant, given that early school dropout is an urgent theme and is a matter of concern to many professionals in the education field and educational institutes. This paper stems from a research of qualitative nature, and utilizes the method of the case study in the Renewable Energy Systems course, integrated modality, of IFSUL –Santana do Livramento Campus. Data were collected by means of document analysis, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews, aiming to present an intervention strategy, besides analyzing the dropout phenomenon. We comprehend that the study of the dropout phenomenon, specifically, as well as factors which lead the student to drop out, is very complex. The implied factors in this process are connected to very peculiar situations and bring about the understanding that the institute shall be committed to the search for solutions that contribute to a reduction of the dropout rates, in a more effective reality. The contribution of this study for the battle against early school dropout was the elaboration of the educational product known as “Handbook on Preventing Early School Dropout in High School Technical Education of the Federal Education Network: KNOWING IS STAYING”, which offers an alternative to the battle against early school dropout to the academic community of the Federal Institute of Rio Grande do Sul (Instituto Federal Sul-rio-grandense). Moreover, analogically, the handbook is also destined to students of other educational levels and modalities of the Federal Education Network. |
